Fire Wire Skewers

At Grilling Addiction we are always looking for new grilling gadgets and innovations. There are so many products out there and while some make you wonder how you ever lived without them, others are just gimmicks.

I was out one day with my wife doing the whole Home Depot/Bed Bath and Beyond thing when I saw Fire Wire. Fire Wire is a flexible grilling skewer made of food grade stainless steel cable. At first glance I was more than skeptical. Two skewers come in a package and retail for under ten dollars, so I gave them a shot.

It didn’t take long for me to see some of the benefits. The Fire Wire skewers are much longer than traditional wood or metal skewers, allowing you to fit a ton of food, and due to them being flexible you can put them right into a bowl or bag to marinate. It is also easy to find a spot on the grill for them because they can bend around other items. They are pretty easy to maneuver on the grill as well, and the stainless cable cools very quickly making them easy to handle.

There are a couple things that I think could be better. The metal piercing tip stays very hot, and probably doesn’t need to be as long as it is. Also, the price may be a bit high, but considering the large capacity and possible longevity of the product it’s perhaps justifiable.

Overall, I was impressed by this product. I was skeptical at first, but the ease of use, simple functionality and quality of materials changed my mind. For a grade I give it a solid B+.

I used these the other night for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised how good these things were. I was skeptical that the loop would be cool to the touch and thought for sure I would have a loop shaped burn on my hand. But, it worked as designed and that was really nice to be able to move the skewers around. I love these things and we will be doing kabobs much more often now.

  2. I purchased two packs of Fire Wire at the store this weekend and we used them last night…AWESOME! The capacity is great (though not quite enough for my family of 5!) and the loops stay cool if you hang them outside the grill as per the instructions. We used four additional traditional metal skewers and we were able to loop the Fire Wire among the straight skewers. It was a beautiful sight-wish I would have photographed it! I would recommend these to anyone who makes kabobs…be sure you follow the instructions for leaving the loop
